Making Civic Learning Come Alive- Spring 2026

The Maine Civics Network invites educators to join us in a professional learning experience- “Making Civic Learning Come Alive”

An opportunity to…

  • join a collegial network of educators;

  • innovate your civics teaching;

  • make your students’ experience of civics more “hands-on” and community-engaged

The Maine Civics Network (MCN) supports educators in their efforts to better prepare Maine youth for responsible democratic citizenship.  “Making Civic Learning Come Alive” is a professional learning opportunity for educators of all areas and levels; our kids can – and should be – learning civic skills and responsibilities in all grades, all subjects, and through student activities and government.

Facilitated by Donna Short, M.Ed., participants will focus on their own daily teaching practice and, through in-person and on-line network activities, will:

identify significant challenges they face in their civics teaching;

  • develop and implement innovative methods of engaging their students in deeper, more lasting learning of civics concepts, skills, and democratic principles; and

  • evaluate the outcomes of their efforts and create descriptions of key lessons they’ve learned, to be shared by the MCN with educators statewide.

Participants can earn 3 graduate credits [awarded through Thomas College] by successfully completing the experience, keeping a written journal, and reading articles in between meetings.

Calendar:  It will involve four (4) full-day, in-person learning sessions and three (3) 2-3 hour small group sessions (online or in-person) to support each educator.  Full-day, in-person sessions will be held in a Central Maine location, TBA.

Cost:  The cost per participant is $700 (includes registration, all materials, and lunch/refreshments at in-person meetings).  Thanks to grants from the Unity Foundation and the Dahlia Fund at the Maine Community Foundation, financial assistance is available; please indicate need on the registration form.  Participants seeking graduate credit may earn 3 credits from Thomas College for an additional tuition fee of $900.

Registration: Will open in November 2025
