Who We Are

The Maine Civics Network is a collaborative of students, educators, and others dedicated to making civics learning more “hands-on” and embedded in the civic life of our communities, counties and state.  Founded in 2022, MCN fosters educators’ learning through collegial networks that support and challenge them to “make civics come alive” for their students.  The Network is open to educators and students from all grade levels, subject areas, and schools in our state.

We have come together to respond to the rising concern over the conduct of American civic life and our democratic traditions.  We share a commitment, now nationwide, to rejuvenating civics education, to making it a vital experience that prepares our youth to participate in our democracy.  These concerns have generated a wide array of teaching methods and curricula nationally, but in Maine professional development to integrate active civic engagement into teachers’ practice is simply not accessible to most educators. Without it, civics instruction continues to be limited to government rules and structures in secondary civics classes. â€‹
